The paint brand is the biggest swing factor: a 20-litre bucket ranges from about ₦18,000 to over ₦170,000. Ask three people what it costs to paint a house in Nigeria and you’ll get three answers that are millions of naira apart. They’re usually all right. The difference is almost entirely which paint goes on the wall. Below is what paint and labour cost in 2026, a worked example for a 3-bedroom house at both ends of the market, and the costs quotes tend to leave out.
How much is paint in Nigeria in 2026?
Paint is sold by the 4-litre gallon and the 20-litre bucket. Published 2026 retail prices:

One 20-litre bucket covers roughly 100–150㎡ per coat on smooth, primed walls. Rough or fresh plaster drinks more.
What does labour cost?
Painters charge by area, by bucket used, or a lump sum. Published 2026 rates for labour alone run about ₦400–₦1,000 per ㎡, higher in Lagos and Abuja and for exterior work that needs scaffolding. Always confirm in writing whether a quote is labour only or labour and materials.
Worked example: painting a 3-bedroom house
A 3-bedroom house has roughly 600–800㎡ of wall surface inside and out. Taking 700㎡, a primer coat and two finishing coats (about 12 buckets of finish and 6 of primer):

Premium finishes can push a 3-bedroom house above ₦4 million (~$2,888).
Watch out: some price guides still quote emulsion at ₦3,000–₦10,000 a gallon. Those are old prices. If a painter’s materials budget is built on them, it won’t survive the paint shop.
What most painting estimates leave out
- Surface prep: filling cracks, sanding and putty on rough walls. On an old or badly plastered house this is where budgets blow up.
- Primer: new plaster soaks up paint. Skip the primer and you’ll buy extra top coat instead.
- Number of coats: a proper finish is primer plus two coats. A one-coat quote looks patchy within months.
- Gloss for doors and frames: priced separately, by the 4-litre gallon.
- Scaffolding: needed for duplex exteriors and adds to labour.
