Start with the drawings, not just “three bedrooms”. The example rows on this page total 2,600–3,350 blocks before wastage and 240–410 bags of cement before any separately specified allowance. These are sums of the earlier article’s illustrative stage allowances, not verified quantities for your house. The cement table excludes moulding the blocks on site.
Two estimates can have different totals and still be talking about different work. Buying ready-made blocks is not the same budget as moulding them yourself. Separate those choices before comparing prices.
How many blocks does a three-bedroom bungalow need?
The earlier example referred to roughly 150–200 sqm, but no measured drawings were supplied with it. Its block allowances are shown below for comparison only. Your wall lengths, openings, wall thicknesses, foundation design and specified block dimensions determine a real take-off.

Arithmetic correction: the previous total of 2,600–3,200 “with 5% waste” did not match these rows. Adding an illustrative 5% to the corrected stage sums gives 2,730–3,518 blocks, rounding the upper result up to a whole block. Your project team should specify the appropriate allowance; 5% is not a universal rule.

The earlier headline said 250–450 bags, but the printed stage values sum to 240–410. These rows do not include cement for moulding blocks on site, and are not a complete specification of every cement-based finish or external work. A qualified quantity surveyor should reconcile the full scope before ordering.

Our cement-only guide includes block moulding and a different set of allowances for a differently described example. It is not an alternative take-off for the same drawings. Do not select the lower number without comparing floor area, included stages and whether blocks are bought ready-made.
How to calculate a material budget
Use separate quantities and delivered rates for each block type. Then add cement purchased for the remaining site work. For illustration only, 3,000 blocks at ₦700 each equal ₦2,100,000, while 300 bags at ₦10,000 equal ₦3,000,000. Together that is ₦5,100,000 before delivery and all other materials or labour. These are example inputs, not current market quotations.
Request dated local quotations and keep delivery, handling, taxes if applicable, and wastage visible. If blocks are bought ready-made, avoid adding a second charge for moulding those same blocks.
What to check before buying
- Drawings, dimensions and the quantities measured from them.
- Block and cement specifications agreed by the qualified project team.
- Supplier quality documentation and any testing specified for the project.
- Delivery access, storage, expected use dates and how quantities will be recorded.
- Exclusions such as external works, labour, sand, aggregate, steel and roofing.
Do not change wall thicknesses or structural specifications to match an online budget. A drop test is not a substitute for the product checks and testing required by your project professionals.

Can one bag make a fixed number of blocks?
There is no safe universal production figure in this guide. Block dimensions, materials, equipment and the required specification affect the quantity and quality. Follow the approved production specification rather than stretching a bag to hit a target count.
Is moulding on site always cheaper?
No. Compare the full cost of materials, labour, equipment, water, handling, quality checks and wastage with a delivered quote for ready-made blocks.
Can I order from the totals on this page?
No. They demonstrate how the earlier allowances add up, not what your particular design requires. Obtain a measured quantity take-off before placing an order.
