“Where in Nigeria has the best light?” is one of the most practical questions a buyer, renter or returning diaspora family can ask — and one of the hardest to answer honestly, because supply shifts and no city is uniformly good. What we can do is rank the major cities on the best available yardstick: how much of each is on Band A (a promised 20+ hours a day) and how reliably those feeders actually deliver. Here’s the July 2026 picture.
How we ranked the cities
NERC’s service bands give a common measure: Band A feeders promise 20+ hours a day, down to Band E at 4 hours. We weighed each city’s Band A coverage against real delivery, using NERC’s 2026 orders on which distributors had the most feeders failing the standard. One telling data point: in NERC’s compensation orders, Eko Disco (Lagos) had the most feeders needing compensation (84), then Ikeja (50), Port Harcourt (22) and Abuja (21) — a rough proxy for where the promise breaks most often.

What most “best electricity city” lists leave out
City averages hide everything that matters. Within any city, reliability is decided at the feeder, so a “good power” city still has dark neighbourhoods and a “bad power” city has bright ones. The premium districts that top these lists also carry the highest tariffs — better light, bigger bill. And with the band regime under pressure in 2026, the safest assumption anywhere in Nigeria is still: plan for backup — solar-inverter or generator — wherever you settle.
